Navigating the Risks of Overseas Dentistry

Overseas Dentistry

In recent years, dental tourism has gained immense popularity amongst UK residents seeking affordable treatments abroad.

But while the allure of lower costs and exotic destinations might be tempting, it’s important to understand the potential risks involved with overseas dentistry and how to navigate them carefully – ensuring the best outcome for your oral and overall health.

Understanding the Appeal

The primary draw of overseas dentistry, for many, is the promise of significant cost savings compared to treatments offered in the UK. We get it! With some overseas practices, particularly in countries including Turkey, Hungary, Poland or Thailand offering dental procedures at a fraction of the standard UK price, without compromising on quality (at least on the surface), it can all sound very tempting.

Risks to Consider

However, beneath the surface lies a range of potential risks that we should all carefully consider before opting for overseas dental care.

These risks include:

Quality Variability

Standards of dental care may vary widely from one country and practice to another. While some clinics abroad may offer excellent service, others may not adhere to the same standards or guidelines upheld by dental practices in the UK.

Communication Challenges

Most dental professionals overseas will speak English, but it’s essential to consider potential language barriers. These barriers can make it challenging to communicate effectively, leading to misunderstandings regarding treatment options, expectations and post-operative care.

Limited Recourse

In the event of complications or dissatisfaction with treatment outcomes, seeking recourse can be challenging when thousands of miles separate you from your dental provider.

Follow-up Care

Consideration must be given to maintenance and follow-up care, as regular check-ups, for example, or dental veneer renewals and tooth replacement may also not be feasible if your dental provider is a plane journey away.

Making an Informed Decision

Before making a decision about overseas dental care, it’s essential to weigh the potential risks against the perceived benefits carefully.

Here are some tips and key factors to consider:

Research

Thoroughly research dental rules and regulations abroad, paying close attention to each individual practice’s reviews, accreditations and certifications. Look for clinics that prioritise patient safety and satisfaction.

Consultation

Schedule a consultation with your local dentist to discuss your treatment options before engaging a dental provider abroad. At our family dental practice, we’ll provide you with valuable insights and guidance based on your specific dental needs and medical history – so even if you don’t decide to go with us, you can bring all of that valuable information with you.

Clear Communication

Taking the time to consult with your chosen overseas dental practitioner prior to your in-person consultation via video call to ensure clear communication channels are established is advised.

Cost Analysis

While cost savings may be appealing, consider the overall value of the treatment, including additional expenses for travel, accommodation and potential follow-up care. Always ensure that you can cover these costs before going ahead with your treatment.

Travel Time Considerations

Factor in the time needed to travel for your dental treatment and any necessary time off work, including potential delays and the availability of transportation options.

Second Opinion

Undecided? Seek a second opinion from another reputable UK dentist before committing to treatment overseas. They will offer an unbiased assessment of your dental needs and treatment plan.

FDC Updates: Introducing AirFlow Technology and Celebrating CQC Success!

FDC-Therapists

At the Family Dental Clinic, we’re thrilled to share two exciting new developments with you. From our cutting-edge AirFlow teeth cleaning technology to our recent success and glowing report from our Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection, we’ve been busy enhancing patient care and ensuring the highest standards of quality and safety.

Read on for the latest updates from our FDC team:

Unveiling Our AirFlow Technology

Almost two years ago now, we invested in new state-of-the-art dental hygiene technology with AirFlow – a gentle and effective cleaning and tooth discolouration treatment.

Our team of two dental hygienists and therapist absolutely love using this machine, and for good reason. With the AirFlow treatment, there’s no sensitivity or pain involved. The treatment protocol not only focuses on cleaning teeth but also serves as a valuable educational tool for patients, showing them areas where they need to brush better.

“At Family Dental clinic, we use AirFlow for Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) – a revolutionary new way of carrying out dental hygiene cleaning! The machine works by combining a natural antimicrobial powder and warm water to provide a gentle, painless and sensitivity-free experience for our patients. Research has also shown some great results using the GBT machine for gum disease treatment, compared to the traditional methods.

So far, our patients have greatly benefited from the experience of GBT. So many patients that come through my door have anxiety about having their teeth cleaned due to bad past experiences. Patients always say they hate the ‘cold water machine’ and the ‘scraping’ of the hand instruments, but once they experience GBT treatment with me, it brings a big smile to my face to hear that their fear and anxiety has been overcome – and that they’re actually looking forward to having another dental hygiene appointment!

Newest research combined with first-hand experience and feedback, makes me proud to work in a practice that provides this service. I would not have my own or my family’s teeth cleaned any other way.”

Anna, Dental Therapist

“My own experience of having treatment with this machine was great. I have many recession sites but there was no sensitivity, no scraping, only a pleasant, nice tasting, warm water jet and shiny, smooth teeth after!”
Magda, Principle Dentist

Celebrating a Successful CQC Inspection!

On February 22nd of this year, we underwent a comprehensive inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the regulatory body for healthcare providers.

CQC inspectors spent the day with us to ensure we are meeting the legal requirements outlined by The Health and Social Care Act 2008 and associated regulations. Led by CQC inspector Annabel and supported by specialist dental advisor Alison, the inspection aimed to gauge our patients’ experiences of care and treatment.

To do so, the CQC asked the following key questions:

  • Is it safe?
  • Is it effective?
  • Is it caring?
  • Is it responsive to people’s needs?
  • Is it well-led?

We are delighted to share that we received five fantastic green tickets and very positive feedback from the inspection. The inspector commended us for our warm welcome, cooperation and open approach to the inspection process. She identified “the whole practice” as a positive aspect, noting our close-knit team and unwavering commitment to patient care. We are proud to report that there were no negatives – we are fully compliant in all areas. The inspectors also praised our culture of continuous improvement and noted that all staff members are involved, supported and work as a cohesive team. What a win!

Well done to the FDC team!
